Do you suffer from mouth ulcers (canker sores, aphthous stomata, oral mucositis)? I didn’t realize that so many people suffered from mouth ulcers like me and that preventing them can be as simple as avoiding certain products. Sometimes I had as many as 4 at once. One would go and another would appear. Just talking made my eyes water, and eating was sometimes unbearably painful.
After suffering from mouth ulcers for such a long time, I read an article about toothpaste containing Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS) causing mouth ulcers in some people. It was incredible to think that by trying to keep my mouth clean by brushing 2-3 times a day, I was actually causing the ulcers! I was desperate to test this theory and took off to my local pharmacy to get a toothpaste without SLS. There were none. I went to the supermarket and looked at the ingredients of every toothpaste on the shelves. They ALL contained SLS.
Finally, I found Squigle Enamel Saver® Toothpaste. I bought a tube to try it out. As I bought it overseas and I had to pay postage too, it cost me over $30 for 1 tube of toothpaste!!! I started using it right away and the results were fantastic. After using it for just a couple of weeks, I had no mouth ulcers. This was so amazing. After decades of constant stinging pain from mouth ulcers, it was worth every penny. I can honestly tell you, the relief I have had since using Squigle is so good that if I had to, I would happily pay $30 per tube!
There are now some other SLS free toothpastes available in Australia. I have tried them and I can tell you that Squigle is the far superior product. None of the others are as pleasant tasting and as much like using a “regular” toothpaste. Dr Edward Cutler, inventor of Squigle toothpaste, says that Squigle works in two ways to prevent mouth ulcers - 1. it is free of irritating ingredients and 2. it contains 36% by weight of natural Xylitol.
I have been using Squigle since 2005 and I’m pleased to say that the great results continue. I have had the odd mouth ulcer during this time but they don’t last nearly as long as they used to and I have never had more than one at a time. In fact, I was so impressed with Squigle that I contacted the maker, Dr Edward Cutler, and began selling it here in Australia.

I have suffered from mouth ulcers, also. I have had more than can be counted in my cheeks, on my gums and tongue, and down my throat. I have them so bad I have to get a steroid shot to start the healing. The pain is so bad, I cry.
My theory is that they are “stress” related. Everytime I get really stressed out badly or have a really stressfull event, I break out in ulcers. My latest new trial for prevention is checking the ph factor in my mouth. (I tried that toothpaste thing and it did not work.) I eat Tums several times a day and drink DanActive each morning to reduce the acid. So far I have been ulcer free for three weeks.
Another thing I faound that helps stop the growth when one appears is to rub Vicks Vapor Rub on it.
Hope these hints helps someone. If no one has ever had these, they cannot imagine the pain involved.

Hi,I’ve had an awful year with mouth ulcers. There was nothing I could to to stop them recurring. Last month I has an allergy test and they found out I was allergic to all dairy products,eggs, bananas, oranges, fish and a few other things. I used to eat bananas daily and ate many dairy products. I have cut all these out of my diet and have also changed my toothpaste to pro enamel sensodyne. I have not had an ulcer for a month now- amazingly. I figure that the bananas and milk I was drinking had a lot to do with them. Allergy test was done in chinese herbalist by analysing my hair sample.
